Mamata Banerjee Urges PM Modi for Fast-Track Courts After RG Kar Medical Hospital Incident
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the central government to bring in central legalization and set up fast-track courts for sensitive issues to ensure speedy trials. This request follows the national outrage over the RG Kar Medical College incident, where a second-year trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
In her letter, Banerjee highlighted the increasing occurrence of rape cases across the country, many of which involve murder. She stressed the need for stringent central laws prescribing exemplary punishment for such crimes. Banerjee suggested that fast-track special courts should be established to handle these cases, with trials preferably completed within 15 days.
The Chief Minister is facing backlash from the opposition over the safety and security of women in her state. BJP leader Anil K Antony has demanded her resignation, alleging that West Bengal has a high number of atrocities against women despite being ruled by a woman chief minister. He also accused the police of tampering with evidence and protecting those involved in such incidents.
The incident at RG Kar Medical College has led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community, demanding justice and better safety measures.
