West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has shown her support for the West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment Bill 2024. She said the bill aims to protect the dignity of women and warned that mistreating Bengal would have wider consequences.

CM Banerjee mentioned that she had written to the Prime Minister twice but received no response. Instead, she got a reply from the Minister of Women and Child Development. She criticized the hurried passing of the Code of Justice Bill without consulting the states and emphasized the need for discussions with all parties before passing such laws.

She expressed her frustration over being humiliated and questioned if it would be appropriate for her party, TMC, to speak against the Prime Minister and Union Health Minister. She highlighted the lack of women police stations during the CPM’s rule and criticized the BJP.

Banerjee stated that Kolkata is safer compared to other cities and thanked everyone for their support in protecting girls’ rights. She recalled the formation of a UN committee in 1981 to eliminate discrimination against women and called for strict punishment for rapists.

She mentioned the case of a junior doctor who passed away on August 9, noting that the police arrested the main accused within 12 hours. She had promised the victim’s family that if all accused were not arrested by Sunday, the case would be transferred to the CBI. She called for capital punishment for the accused.

Banerjee highlighted that West Bengal has 88 fast track courts and 52 designated courts for women, with over 3 lakh cases registered and most resolved. She criticized the opposition for not addressing rape cases in other states and pointed out the low conviction rate for rape cases in the country.

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee urged the central government to take decisive action on the anti-rape law, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive law with swift trials and convictions within 50 days.
