Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Central Government Over Flood Issues in West Bengal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the central government for not conducting proper dredging activities in the Ganga River. She claims this negligence causes annual flood-like situations in the central regions of West Bengal.

Issues with Damodar Valley Corporation

Banerjee pointed out that the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) discharges water suddenly, which exacerbates flooding. She stated, “DVC has to report to us, then only discharge water.”

Impact on Various Regions

She mentioned that areas from Durgapur to Birbhum face flood-like situations. In North Bengal, cracks have developed in roads, and places like Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar are severely affected. Relief centers have been set up in Cooch Behar, while Darjeeling remains normal.

Criticism of Railway Department

Banerjee also criticized the railway department for not taking steps to restore normalcy in flooded areas, despite earning significant revenue from the region. She emphasized the need for the railway to restore transformers and other infrastructure.
