Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Central Government Over West Bengal Floods
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 29: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the BJP-led Central government for neglecting the flood situation in the state. She accused them of doing nothing to help the affected areas.
Flood Situation in North Bengal
Before leaving for north Bengal to assess the flood situation, CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Nothing has been done, the entire north Bengal is submerged. Everyone makes grand promises during elections and then disappears.” She mentioned that 5 lakh cusecs of Koshi river water released from Nepal has affected many areas in the state.
Affected Areas
CM Banerjee stated that the water is flowing into the Ganga river through Bihar and Bengal, affecting Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurdwar. There is also a possibility of floods in Malda, Murshidabad, and South Dinajpur.
Rescue Efforts
Chief Minister Banerjee assured that rescue and assistance work is ongoing. “Chief Secretary has also been sent to North Bengal. All the people were taken to safe places last night. Rescue and assistance work is going on by the police and the state administration. I will hold a meeting after reaching there and then will give an update on further information,” she said.
Opposition’s Criticism
West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari blamed CM Mamata Banerjee for the flood situation, calling it a failure of the TMC government. He said, “Mamata Banerjee is responsible for this… This is TMC’s failure, TMC should be accountable to the people of Ghatal… The state government has no role here, Mamata Banerjee herself came here, but what happened? There is no rice in people’s homes, no tarpaulin, no food for children. The government has completely failed here.”
Letter to Prime Minister
CM Mamata Banerjee had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the floods had affected five million people and urging the central government to release emergency funds to support recovery efforts. She mentioned the significant loss of crops, damage to public infrastructure, and destruction of homes and livestock.
Chief Minister Banerjee urged Prime Minister Modi to seriously consider her concerns and requested the release of funds for flood management efforts to help the affected population.
