Mamata Banerjee Claims Mic Was Muted at NITI Aayog Meeting, Nirmala Sitharaman Denies

In Kolkata, West Bengal, a disagreement arose between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during a NITI Aayog meeting. Mamata Banerjee claimed her microphone was muted, preventing her from speaking about the deprivation of funds to Bengal in the Union Budget. She stated she was only allowed to speak for five minutes, while others spoke for longer.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman refuted these claims, stating that every Chief Minister, including Mamata Banerjee, was given their allotted time to speak, which was displayed on screens. She called Banerjee’s claims ‘unfortunate’ and suggested that Banerjee could have requested more time if needed.

TMC Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya supported Banerjee, accusing the Finance Minister of making excuses and using unparliamentary language. Bhattacharya emphasized that Banerjee knows what to say and how to say it.

Banerjee alleged political discrimination, stating that she was the only opposition member present and felt insulted by the limited speaking time. She walked out of the meeting in protest, claiming that other Chief Ministers were given more time to speak.

Banerjee participated in the meeting to strengthen cooperative federalism and share regional aspirations, but felt that states like West Bengal were deprived in the recent Union Budget.
