Mamata Banerjee Blames Central Government for West Bengal Floods

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP-led Central government of causing floods in West Bengal by releasing water from Jharkhand’s reservoirs. She criticized the Central government’s handling of the Ganga Action Plan and flood control.

Banerjee mentioned that if the Central government provided one-fourth of the money it spends on elections and statues, West Bengal could better manage the flood situation. She warned that more areas would be flooded if the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) releases more water.

On Monday, Banerjee toured the flood-affected districts and distributed essential items to the affected people. She also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the flooding in South Bengal due to heavy water releases from DVC reservoirs. She claimed that the water release was done without sufficient input from her government.

Banerjee highlighted that a peak water release lasting nine hours was initiated with only 3.5 hours’ notice, which was inadequate for effective disaster management. She urged the Prime Minister to release emergency funds and improve coordination to manage the flood situation. The floods have affected five million people, causing significant loss of crops, damage to infrastructure, and destruction of homes and livestock.
