Mamata Banerjee Addresses Protests and Urges Doctors to Return to Work in West Bengal

On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the state government is meeting all requirements of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). She accused the central government and certain leftist parties of conspiring against her.

Banerjee’s comments followed a Supreme Court directive for the West Bengal government to ensure accommodation for CISF personnel at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Addressing an administrative review meeting, she requested protesters to return to work, citing issues caused by noise pollution.

Banerjee urged doctors to resume their duties, denying accusations of offering money to the family of a deceased doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata. She emphasized that the Supreme Court has requested doctors to return to work immediately and assured them that no action would be taken against them if they comply by 5 pm the next day.

Banerjee also highlighted incidents of migrant workers from Rajasthan being attacked in Odisha and claimed that Bengalis were being targeted in the BJP-ruled state. She stressed that such incidents would not be tolerated in West Bengal.

Regarding the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, Banerjee stated that its implementation is a priority. She also instructed officials to maintain health infrastructure and ensure no action is taken against doctors.

Banerjee accused outsiders of increasing crime in the state and requested them to take responsibility. She alleged that ongoing protests were a conspiracy by the Centre and CPI-M, and that the Reclaim the Night movement was causing disturbances for senior citizens.

Finally, Banerjee instructed district magistrates and superintendents of police to be on high alert during Durga Puja and requested the Election Commission to extend voter ID card registration by one month due to puja preparations.
