Mamata Banerjee Addresses Flood Crisis in West Bengal

Meeting Held to Tackle Flood Situation

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting on Sunday to address the flood situation in several districts including Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur, Malda, and Murshidabad.

Safety Measures and Assistance

Speaking at a press conference in Siliguri, Chief Minister Banerjee urged residents to vacate unsafe houses and avoid electric wires. She announced that six shops in Vidhan Market, which were completely damaged, will receive Rs 1 lakh each from Disaster Management. Shops with less damage will get Rs 50,000.

All district magistrates, district councils, panchayats, and municipal corporations have been alerted about the potential for more floods. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared.

Criticism of Central Government

Earlier, Chief Minister Banerjee criticized the BJP-led Central government for neglecting the flood situation in the state. She accused them of making empty promises during elections and then disappearing.

Rescue Efforts

Chief Minister Banerjee stated that rescue and assistance work is ongoing, with the Chief Secretary sent to North Bengal. She assured that all affected people have been moved to safe locations.

Opposition’s Response

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari blamed Chief Minister Banerjee for the flood situation, calling it a failure of her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Appeal to Prime Minister Modi

Chief Minister Banerjee had previously written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the release of emergency funds to support recovery efforts. She highlighted the significant loss of crops, damage to infrastructure, and destruction of homes and livestock.
