In Saarbrucken, Germany, Indian badminton player Malvika Bansod has advanced to the second round of the Hylo Open 2024. She achieved this by defeating Bulgaria’s Hristomira Popovska in the first round of the women’s singles event at the BWF Super 300 tournament. Ranked 34th in the world, Malvika won with scores of 21-6, 21-17. The match took place at the Saarlandhalle indoor arena.

Malvika, who reached the quarter-finals last year and is seeded sixth this time, will next face Denmark’s Irina Amalie Andersen in the round of 16. Another Indian player, Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj, also progressed to the second round. She will compete against Denmark’s eighth seed, Julie Dawall Jakobsen, after defeating Yu Chien Hui from Chinese Taipei with scores of 21-13, 21-19.

Keyura Mopati made it to the women’s singles main draw by winning against local player Miranda Wilson with scores of 21-15, 21-15 in the qualifiers. In women’s doubles, India’s Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra will face sixth seeds Natasja P Anthonisen and Maiken Fruergaard. In men’s singles, world No. 44 Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, seeded seventh, is set to play on Wednesday.

Notably, Lakshya Sen, a Paris 2024 Olympics semi-finalist, was the last Indian to win a title at the Hylo Open, securing the men’s singles title in 2019. Subhankar Dey also won the men’s title the year before when the tournament was known as the SaarLorLux Open.
