Mallikarjun Kharge Criticizes Modi’s ‘Make in India’ Initiative
New Delhi, India – Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, calling it a ‘stunt’ that has led to the ‘de-industrialisation’ of India’s manufacturing sector.
Kharge’s Criticism
In a post on X, Kharge stated, “With rampant joblessness, plunging exports and extinguishing savings, Modi Govt’s glitzy ads on ‘Make in India’ cannot sugarcoat its colossal failures!”

Key Areas of Failure
Kharge outlined five key areas where he believes the Modi government’s policies have failed:
- The average growth rate of the Manufacturing sector between 2014-15 and 2023-24 is just 3.1 per cent, compared to 7.85 per cent between 2004-05 and 2013-14.
- The number of employees in factories grew at 6.2 per cent annually during the Congress-UPA regime, but this growth fell to just 2.8 per cent under the Modi Govt.
- The share of Manufacturing in India’s GDP has hit an all-time low of just 12.83 per cent in 2023, compared to 15.25 per cent in 2013 during Congress-UPA.
- PLI schemes have failed in several sectors, including high-efficiency solar PV modules, advance chemistry cell (ACC) batteries, textile products, speciality steel, white goods, and medical devices.
- Modi Govt has sold stakes of profit-making PSUs, eliminated 5.1 lakh government posts, and increased casual and contract recruitment in PSUs by 91 per cent.
Kharge concluded by stating that the Modi government’s policies have led to a significant decline in the manufacturing sector, affecting employment and economic growth.
