Mallikarjun Kharge Appoints New Leaders for Maharashtra Congress Ahead of Elections

New Delhi [India], August 16: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Syed Muzaffar Hussain as the Working President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. Additionally, Balasaheb Thorat has been appointed as a Member, and Mohammad Arif Naseem Khan as a special invitee of the Congress Working Committee.

This announcement follows the Election Commission’s decision to schedule legislative assembly elections for Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana, while delaying elections in Maharashtra due to security concerns and upcoming festivals.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar explained that the high demand for security forces in Jammu and Kashmir is the primary reason for not holding elections in Maharashtra at this time. He also mentioned that rainfall and a series of festivals in Maharashtra, including Ganesh Chaturthi, Pitrapaksh, Navratri, and Diwali, have affected the election schedule.

The tenure of the Haryana state assembly ends on November 3, while that of Maharashtra culminates in November. The Lok Sabha polls 2024 have boosted the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) winning seven seats, the Congress 13, and the NCP-SP one, taking the total tally of the alliance to 17.

Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly are scheduled to be held later this year, but the Election Commission of India has yet to announce the dates. The Maharashtra election will see a two-way fight between the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition and the Maha Yuti Alliance.
