Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Visits India

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed arrived in New Delhi for a significant bilateral visit. This marks President Muizzu’s first official visit to India, scheduled from October 6 to 10, following an invitation from President Droupadi Murmu.

Meetings with Indian Leaders

During his visit, President Muizzu is set to meet with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior officials. Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Kiriti Vardhan Singh, welcomed him upon arrival.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

President Muizzu expressed his intention to visit India soon during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, highlighting the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations. This visit follows his attendance at Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony earlier this year.

Changing Diplomatic Trends

Traditionally, Maldivian Presidents have made their first foreign visit to India. However, President Muizzu initially visited Turkiye and China after taking office. His government has taken unconventional steps in India-Maldives relations, including a campaign focused on the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives.

Reconciliation Efforts

Despite previous tensions, President Muizzu has recently adopted a reconciliatory approach, acknowledging India’s financial assistance and describing New Delhi as one of Male’s closest allies.
