Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Visits India

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, along with First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed, has embarked on a State visit to India. This marks President Muizzu’s first official bilateral visit to the country. The visit is at the invitation of India’s President, Droupadi Murmu.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Muizzu expressed his intention to visit India soon, highlighting the strong relationship between the two nations. This visit follows his attendance at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony earlier this year.

Diplomatic Shifts

Unlike previous Maldivian presidents who prioritized India for their first foreign visit, President Muizzu initially visited Turkiye and China. His government has taken steps to mend relations with India after a period of tension, despite his campaign’s ‘India Out’ stance, which focused on the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives.
