Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Sends Condolences to PM Modi Over Kerala Landslides
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has sent a heartfelt condolence message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after landslides in Wayanad District, Kerala, resulted in the deaths of over 100 people and injured many more.
President Muizzu expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, describing the extensive loss of lives, livelihoods, and devastation as an ‘unimaginable tragedy’. He conveyed his condolences on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives, hoping for swift and successful search and rescue operations.
The Kerala Revenue Department reported that the death toll from the landslides in Meppadi, Wayanad, has risen to 158. Rescue operations continue in Chooralmala, with 1200 personnel from the Indian Army, DSC Centre, Territorial Army, NDRF, Indian Navy, and IAF involved.
Brigadier Arjun Seagan of the Para Regimental Training Centre stated that 500 to 600 personnel from various forces and volunteers are conducting rescue operations. The Indian Army has evacuated over 1,000 people, and the Indian Air Force is also involved despite challenging conditions.
The landslides, which struck on Tuesday morning, caused widespread destruction in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, damaging homes, roads, and uprooting trees. Relief and rescue efforts are ongoing, with many areas isolated and roads washed away.
President Muizzu concluded his message by wishing strength to the victims’ families and everyone affected by this catastrophe.
