Maldives Coast Guard Ship Huravee Arrives in Mumbai for Refit

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard Ship (CGS) Huravee has reached Mumbai’s Naval Dockyard for a scheduled refit. The ship was escorted by the Indian Naval Ship Talwar from Male to Mumbai.

Refit Details

This refit is the first since the Huravee was handed over to the MNDF in May 2023. It will include routine maintenance and upgrades to extend the ship’s operational life and enhance its capabilities. The refit is estimated to cost over USD 4 million and will be financed by the Government of India.

India-Maldives Cooperation

The refit initiative was announced during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India from October 6-10. It highlights the strong defense and diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives, as part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision SAGAR, which stands for “Security and Growth for All in the Region.”

Boosting Maritime Security

The upgrades to the Huravee are expected to enhance the operational capabilities of the Maldivian Coast Guard, strengthening the Maldives’ maritime security infrastructure. This collaboration reflects India’s commitment to capacity building in the Maldives.

Digital Cooperation

Additionally, President Muizzu has taken steps to introduce the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in the Maldives, following India’s agreement to share its expertise in digital and financial services. This development is part of the broader cooperation between the two nations.
