Malabar 2024: A Maritime Exercise in Visakhapatnam

In Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the Multilateral Maritime Exercise ‘Malabar 2024’ is underway, featuring navies from India, Australia, Japan, and the US. Since October 9, these navies have been participating in various activities coordinated by India’s Eastern Naval Command.

Key Activities and Engagements

The exercise includes Key Leadership Engagement (KLE), Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE), cross-deck visits, sports events, and pre-sailing discussions. These activities aim to enhance maritime cooperation, build camaraderie, and foster operational synergy.

Leadership Discussions

Senior naval leaders, including Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar of India, Admiral Stephen Koehler of the US, Vice Admiral Katsushi Omachi of Japan, and Rear Admiral Chris Smith of Australia, discussed strengthening naval interoperability and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Knowledge Exchange and Cultural Events

The SMEE and cross-deck visits allowed for the exchange of knowledge and best practices. Crews also participated in friendly sports fixtures and enjoyed an Indian dinner, promoting cultural familiarity and camaraderie.

Upcoming Sea Phase

Following the harbour activities, pre-sailing discussions will focus on strategies for the sea phase in the Bay of Bengal, starting October 14. This year’s exercise is led by India, with the planning and exercise lead rotating annually among the participating nations.
