The Malabar 2024 naval exercise kicked off in Visakhapatnam, India, with naval forces from Australia, Japan, and the United States joining the host nation. This marks the 28th iteration of the exercise, which began in 1992 as a bilateral event between India and the US. Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar of the Indian Navy emphasized the exercise’s role in fostering operational synergy and strengthening friendships among the participating nations. The exercise involves eight ships and nearly a dozen aircraft from the four nations, with activities scheduled in the Bay of Bengal. The at-sea exercises will cover surface, sub-surface, air, and information domains. Notable participants include the US Navy’s USS Dewey, Japan’s JS Ariake, Australia’s HMAS Stuart, and India’s INS Delhi.

Vice Admiral Katsushi Omachi of Japan and Commodore Jonathan Ley of Australia expressed their commitment to the exercise, noting its contribution to regional peace and stability. The exercise’s leadership rotates annually among the participating nations, showcasing their ability to operate across the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean.
