Major Dhyan Chand’s Statue Unveiled by Son Ashok Kumar on National Sports Day in Jabalpur

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, August 29: On National Sports Day, Olympian Ashok Kumar, son of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, unveiled his father’s statue in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Major Dhyan Chand, known as ‘The Wizard,’ represented the Indian hockey team from 1925 to 1949, scoring over 1500 goals in 185 matches and winning three Olympic Gold Medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and his birth anniversary on August 29 is celebrated as National Sports Day.

After unveiling the statue, Ashok Kumar expressed his pride, stating, “His qualities and efficiency influenced the country and its self-respect. He started a new culture of Hockey in India… It is a moment of pride for me… The children who come here will get a new direction and inspiration.”

Earlier, on August 24, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, encouraged citizens to participate in outdoor sports for at least one hour in celebration of National Sports Day. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a fit nation, Mandaviya emphasized the importance of the Fit India Movement, urging everyone to stay active and play sports. He highlighted that National Sports Day is a chance to honor sports heroes and promote a healthy lifestyle.
