Mahua Maji Criticizes BJP’s Politics, Confident in Mahagathbandhan’s Success in Jharkhand Elections

In Ranchi, Jharkhand, Mahua Maji, a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for engaging in divisive politics and recruiting leaders from other parties. She expressed confidence that the Mahagathbandhan, an alliance of Congress, JMM, RJD, and other parties, will retain power in the upcoming assembly elections.

Maji stated, “BJP believes in the politics of divide and they have taken away many people from very powerful parties, not only in Jharkhand but also in Maharashtra and everywhere. But it has not benefitted them in any way.” She added that many people are joining JMM and that the Mahagathbandhan is confident of forming the government.

The elections for the 81 seats in the Jharkhand assembly will be held in two phases on November 13 and November 20. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced that the INDIA bloc will contest the elections together, with JMM and Congress contesting 70 of the 81 seats. Talks are ongoing with RJD and Left parties for the remaining seats.

In the 2019 elections, the UPA, which included JMM, Congress, and RJD, won 47 seats, defeating BJP’s 25 seats. Congress leader Banna Gupta expressed confidence that the INDIA bloc will continue to govern Jharkhand.

In a boost for JMM, former BJP MLA Kedar Hajra and former AJSU vice president Umakant Rajak joined the party. The nomination process for the first phase of the elections has begun.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, speaking at an event in Ranchi, promised to remove the 50% reservation cap and conduct a caste census if Congress comes to power at the Centre. He highlighted the wealth disparity in India, noting that the richest 1% control 40% of the country’s wealth, while the majority have little representation in institutions.

Votes for the Jharkhand elections will be counted on November 23.
