On Thursday, Mahesh Kumar Khichi from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was elected as the new mayor of Delhi. Khichi, representing the Dev Nagar ward in Karol Bagh, narrowly defeated BJP’s Kishan Lal from Shakurpur ward by three votes. Out of 265 total votes, Khichi received 133, while Lal got 130, with 2 votes declared invalid.

Focus on Cleanliness

Khichi emphasized that his main focus as mayor will be the cleanliness of Delhi. He aims to continue the work of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in serving the people of the city.

Election Details

The election took place on Thursday afternoon, with security heightened at the Civic Centre building. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had reappointed BJP councillor and former East Delhi mayor Satya Sharma as the presiding officer the day before.

Background

The AAP gained control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in December 2022, ending the BJP’s 15-year leadership. Khichi succeeds Shelly Oberoi, who took office in 2023.
