Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha Celebrates Marathi’s Classical Language Status

Maharashtra’s minister, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, expressed his happiness over the central government’s decision to recognize Marathi as a classical language. He stated that this move serves justice to Maharashtra, fulfilling a long-standing demand. Lodha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the state’s 13 crore people.

On Thursday, the Union Cabinet granted classical language status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar also expressed gratitude, highlighting the importance of this decision for the promotion and development of Marathi. Pawar acknowledged the efforts of politicians, officials from the Marathi Sahitya Parishad, and other literary figures in advocating for this recognition.

Pawar noted that although the decision was delayed, it is crucial for the advancement of Marathi and the other languages. The Government of India established the category of “classical languages” in 2004, with Tamil being the first to receive this status. The criteria for a classical language include high antiquity, a rich body of ancient literature, and an original literary tradition.

Since then, the government has recognized several languages as classical, including Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.
