Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 1: Maharashtra Minister of Relief and Rehabilitation, Anil Bhaidas Patil, has expressed his support for the introduction of three new criminal laws. He emphasized the importance of updating the legal framework to keep up with changing times.

Speaking on Monday, Patil said, “There should be constant changes in the legal framework. It is important to implement new laws in light of changing times. We welcome the three new criminal laws.”

The new laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), came into effect on July 1 at midnight. These laws will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860, the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively.

Several new provisions have been incorporated to suit contemporary times and technologies. The new laws aim to enhance efficiency and fairness in the legal process.

Patil also addressed the tragic incident in Lonavala, where three people, including two minors, drowned near Bhushi Dam on June 30. He condemned the incident and urged people to avoid prohibited areas. “I have spoken to the concerned authorities and an investigation is underway on the matter,” he said.

The victims were identified as Shahista Ansari (36), Amima Ansari (13), and Umera Ansari (8). Two children, Adnan Ansari (4) and Maria Sayyad (9), are still missing. A rescue operation is ongoing.

The three new laws received Parliament’s approval on December 21, 2023, and President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on December 25, 2023. The laws were published in the official gazette on the same day.
