Maharashtra Leaders’ Bags and Helicopters Checked Amid Election Tensions
In Mumbai, Maharashtra, a political stir has arisen over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) routine checks of political leaders’ luggage. This includes the bags and helicopters of Mahayuti leaders like Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Ajit Pawar emphasized the importance of these checks for fair elections, urging respect for the law. Eknath Shinde’s bags were checked at Palghar Police ground helipad during an election campaign. Similarly, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis’s bags were inspected at the Katol assembly constituency.
Controversy sparked when Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, criticized the checks, questioning if similar scrutiny was applied to leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ajit Pawar. Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) called it “dirty politics,” noting Thackeray’s bags were checked twice. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut accused the ECI of bias, alleging money distribution by Mahayuti leaders without action from the ECI.
The ECI clarified that all checks follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure fairness. Recently, Thane Police seized Rs 2.5 crore in cash in Navi Mumbai, and the ECI reported seizing Rs 558 crore worth of cash and valuables in Maharashtra and other states. The Maharashtra assembly elections are set for November 20, with results on November 23.
