Maharashtra Government to Give Land for New Bombay High Court Building by September 10
The Maharashtra government has announced that it will hand over 4.39 acres of land to the Bombay High Court by September 10 for the construction of a new building. This information was shared with the Supreme Court, which is led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and includes justices BR Gavai and JB Pardiwala.
On July 8, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court met with the Judges Committee, and another meeting with stakeholders was held on July 9. The state government also provided a timeline for handing over an additional 30.46 acres to the High Court.
The Supreme Court has scheduled further hearings for August 22. The issue began in May when the Supreme Court took suo moto jurisdiction over the need for proper accommodation for the High Court of Judicature in Bombay. The existing building is about 150 years old, and on October 3, 2022, the High Court approved the Maharashtra government’s proposal to allocate land in Bandra (East), Mumbai.
