Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole Speaks on Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification from Paris Olympics

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 7: Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole has criticized the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics, calling it ‘sports politics.’ Patole emphasized the need for higher-level discussions to ensure Vinesh gets a chance to compete.

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event for exceeding the weight limit, which was a significant blow to India’s medal hopes. She was set to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the United States in the Gold Medal match.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi consoled Vinesh, calling her a ‘champion among champions’ and an inspiration for all Indians. He urged her to come back stronger and expressed his support through a post on X.

Sources revealed that the Prime Minister spoke to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha to explore options to address Vinesh’s disqualification. He also urged PT Usha to file a strong protest if it could help Vinesh’s case.

A statement from the Indian Olympic contingent confirmed Vinesh’s disqualification due to her weight exceeding the 50 kg limit. The team requested privacy for Vinesh and stated that no further comments would be made at this time.

Vinesh had reached the Gold medal contest after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.
