Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 4: The Maharashtra Congress held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the upcoming state assembly elections. Key leaders such as Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala, state Congress President Nana Patole, Prithviraj Chavan, Balasaheb Thorat, Naseem Khan, and Nitin Raut were present.

Uddhav Thackeray’s Criticism

On Saturday, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray criticized Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Thackeray stated, “Now the battle is in the field, I said in Mumbai ‘either I stay or you stay’. Here is a poster. In the photo, a Kalingad (Uddhav Thackeray calls Devendra Fadnavis watermelon) is placed at my feet. Some thought I challenged him (Devendra Fadnavis). But, you don’t challenge the clods, you have to crush them with your finger. You are not big enough for me to challenge.” He also called the BJP a group of robbers.

Upcoming Elections

The state is likely to go to polls for the 288-member legislative assembly later this year, as the current government’s tenure ends in 2024. However, the Election Commission has yet to announce the dates.

Previous Election Results

In the 2019 elections, the BJP’s seat count in Maharashtra dropped to nine from 23, with a vote share of 26.18%. The Congress improved slightly, securing 13 seats. The Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won seven and one seats respectively, bringing the NDA’s total to 17. The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) got nine seats, while the NCP – Sharadchandra Pawar won eight seats.
