Maharashtra Congress Leaders Meet in Mumbai Amid Election Preparations
The Maharashtra Congress Party’s State Election Committee gathered at Tilak Bhavan in Mumbai. Key figures like Ramesh Chennithala, Nana Patole, Balasaheb Thorat, Vijay Wadettiwar, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Mukulji Wasnik, and Manikrao Thackeray attended. This meeting comes after Congress’s unexpected loss in Haryana, where BJP won 48 seats compared to Congress’s 37.
The Maharashtra Assembly, with 288 seats, is set for elections later this year, though the schedule is pending from the Election Commission. Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole criticized the state government’s toll exemption for LMVs entering Mumbai as an election ‘jumla’, urging people not to take it seriously. Prithviraj Chavan echoed this sentiment, calling it a desperate pre-election move.
The upcoming election will feature a contest between the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, including Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Congress, against the Maha Yuti Alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT) stated that MVA will announce their chief ministerial candidate after Mahayuti does. He criticized the BJP’s leadership and the Maharashtra government, particularly over the killing of NCP leader Baba Siddiqui.
