Maharashtra Congress Chief Opposes Reappointment of Rashmi Shukla as DGP

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole has expressed strong objections to the potential reappointment of IPS Rashmi Shukla as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. In a letter to the state Governor CP Radhakrishnan and the Chief Election Commissioner, Patole highlighted concerns over Shukla’s previous appointment and tenure.

Concerns Over Appointment

Patole argued that Shukla’s initial appointment on January 4, 2024, violated the Supreme Court’s directive requiring a minimum remaining service period of six months for DGP appointments. He also noted that the extension granted to her on February 27, 2024, was invalid due to lack of approval from the Central Government and bypassing necessary consultations.

ECI’s Directive Ignored

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had ordered Shukla’s removal on November 5, 2024, but this directive has not been followed. Patole emphasized that any move to reinstate her would violate the ECI’s authority and Supreme Court guidelines.

Issues During Tenure

Patole accused Shukla of causing unrest within the police force, having strained relations with senior officers, and facing multiple complaints about her decision-making and fitness for duty. He also mentioned ongoing investigations into allegations of illegal phone tapping and misuse of power.

Political Context

The issue arises amid intense campaigning in Maharashtra, with the ruling Mahayuti and opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) competing for voter support ahead of the Assembly elections on November 20, with results to be announced on November 23.
