Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde Announces State Honours for Late NCP Leader Baba Siddique

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that Baba Siddique, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), will be cremated with full state honours. Siddique, who served as a minister in the Maharashtra government from 2004 to 2008 and as chairman of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), was shot dead in Mumbai.

Investigation into the Murder

The Mumbai Crime Branch has registered a case at Nirmal Nagar Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Arms Act, and Maharashtra Police Act. The case is being investigated under Crime Registration No. 589/2024. Delhi Police will also send a special investigation team to assist in the investigation.

Suspects and Motive

Police have identified two suspects, Gurmail Singh from Haryana and Dharamraj Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh, who were arrested in connection with the murder. The suspects had been monitoring Siddique for months. The motive is believed to be related to a gangster’s attempt to establish influence in Mumbai.

Reactions and Impact

The NCP has cancelled all scheduled programs in response to Siddique’s death. Siddique, a three-time MLA from Bandra West, had joined Ajit Pawar’s NCP earlier this year after leaving the Congress. He was attacked by unidentified assailants and succumbed to his injuries at Lilavati Hospital.
