Global Chess League Season 2: Icon Players Announced
The Global Chess League has revealed the list of Icon players for its second season, which will take place in London from October 3 to 12 at the Friends House. This league is a collaboration between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Star Players
World number one and five-time world champion, Magnus Carlsen, will continue to play for Alpine SG Piper. Joining him are two new Icon players: Hikaru Nakamura, who will play for the American Gambits, and Anish Giri, who will debut with PBG Alaskan Knights.
Returning players include five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand for Ganges Grandmasters, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave for Mumba Masters, and Ian Nepomniachtchi for Triveni Continental Kings.
Exciting Matches Ahead
Sameer Pathak, CEO of the Global Chess League, expressed excitement about the upcoming season, stating that the renowned players will offer an incredible experience for millions of chess fans. Magnus Carlsen shared his enthusiasm for the team-based format, while Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri highlighted the unique and thrilling nature of the league.
Viswanathan Anand and Ian Nepomniachtchi also expressed their eagerness to participate, emphasizing the intense and high-level competition. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave looked forward to reuniting with his team, Mumba Masters.
League Format
The league will feature six teams, each consisting of six players: one Icon player, two superstar male players, two superstar female players, and one prodigy player. Fans can expect at least three marquee showdowns daily between the Icon players.
