Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Lead Indian Delegation to BRICS Forum in Russia
New Delhi [India], July 9, 2024: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead an Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD) to the tenth BRICS Parliamentary Forum (PF) in St. Petersburg, Russia on July 11 and 12, 2024. The delegation will include:
- Harivansh, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha
- Shambhu Sharan Patel, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha
- Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General, Lok Sabha
- P.C. Mody, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha
- Anjani Kumar, Joint Secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat
The theme of the forum is ‘The Role of Parliaments in Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security.’ Participants will include Speakers, Presiding Officers, and Members of Parliament from BRICS countries and invitee countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, along with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Tulia Ackson.
Om Birla will deliver speeches on ‘The BRICS Parliamentary dimension: Prospects for strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation’ and ‘The role of Parliaments in countering the fragmentation of the multilateral trade system and overcoming threats related to the consequences of global crises.’ Harivansh will address the forum on ‘The role of Parliaments in enhancing the efficiency of the system of international relations and ensuring its democratization’ and ‘Inter-parliamentary cooperation in the humanitarian and cultural spheres.’
A joint statement will be adopted at the end of the summit. Om Birla may also hold bilateral meetings with Presiding Officers of participating Parliaments and meet members of the Indian Diaspora in Moscow, Russia during his visit.
