New Delhi, India – On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid tribute to the great educationist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and all teachers for their invaluable contributions to society. Speaking at Hansraj College, University of Delhi, Birla emphasized the significant role of teachers in shaping lives and nation-building.

Importance of Teachers in Indian Tradition

Birla highlighted the esteemed place of teachers, or ‘Gurus,’ in Indian knowledge tradition, remembering notable figures like Guru Vishwamitra, Dronacharya, Kautilya, Kalidas, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, Mahatma Hansraj, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Swami Vivekananda, and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He noted that these Gurus have enriched India with their wisdom and knowledge.

Role of Educational Institutions

Birla stressed that educational institutions shape the direction and future of a country. He stated, “The contributions of a teacher are not limited to just imparting education. Teachers also shape our personalities, beliefs, and skills.” He urged students to read biographies of great personalities like Mahatma Hansraj for inspiration.

Preparing for the Future

Birla observed that India is on the brink of the fourth industrial revolution, with advancements in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and other modern fields becoming crucial. He emphasized the responsibility of keeping the country at the forefront of these subjects and noted that India’s rapid progress is due to the quality of students shaped by their teachers.

Hansraj College’s Legacy

Birla praised Hansraj College, established in 1948, for its achievements in education and its role in promoting research and innovation. He noted that the college has created an academic environment that fosters value-based holistic education and personal development. Birla was honored with the Mahatma Hansraj Award at the event, which was also attended by Lok Sabha MP Naveen Jindal.
