Leon Marchand, a 22-year-old French swimmer, achieved an incredible feat at the Paris Olympics 2024. Trained by Michael Phelps’ former coach Bob Bowman, Marchand showcased an epic performance, winning two gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter breaststroke.

Marchand dethroned a reigning Olympic champion for the second time within two hours, taking his second Olympic gold of the day in an Olympic record time of 2:05.85. With this stellar performance, Marchand became the first French swimmer to ever win three gold medals, all within four days, in front of his home crowd at the Paris La Defense Arena.

“Everyone was telling me it was impossible,” Marchand said. But it was his coach, Bowman, who encouraged him. “Gave me the confidence I was lacking,” Marchand added. He described the 200m butterfly as a “crazy rivalry” and credited his strategy of staying close to Hungary’s Kristof Milak and getting ahead in the last meters.

Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook, the reigning Olympic champion, took silver in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:06.79, finishing 0.94 seconds behind Marchand. Stubblety-Cook praised Marchand for his competitiveness and expressed satisfaction with his silver medal.

Marchand’s victory was celebrated by the supportive French crowd, making it a memorable moment for the young swimmer.
