Left Front Submits Nominations for Tripura Panchayat Elections Amid Violence Concerns

The Opposition Left Front in Tripura has submitted nominations for the three-tier Panchayat elections, which will be held on August 8, with votes counted on August 12. The nominations were mainly for Zilla Parishad posts.

In West Tripura, 17 Left candidates filed their nomination papers, received by District Magistrate and Collector Vishal Kumar. CPIM leader and former MP Sankar Prasad Datta mentioned that 16 more nominations are prepared for filing in Agartala and Sonamura under the Sepahijala district.

However, the nomination process faced violence in some areas, especially in Nalchar under the Sepahijala district. CPIM Tripura state secretary and Leader of Opposition, Jitendra Choudhary, reported that their candidates were besieged by ruling party workers. Despite contacting senior police officials, no positive response was received.

Choudhary also highlighted that in the last Panchayat elections, the ruling party won 96% of the seats unopposed. He appealed to the administration and the public to ensure fair elections. Regarding collaboration with Congress, Choudhary stated that local-level leaders would decide, and in some areas, they might adjust to defeat the BJP.
