Leaders Pay Tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on His Birth Anniversary
In New Delhi, several union ministers, current and former members of Parliament, and BJP leaders gathered to pay floral tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of Jana Sangh, on his birth anniversary. The event took place in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.
Key Figures in Attendance
Union Ministers S Jaishankar, Kiren Rijiju, and Arjun Ram Meghwal were among those who paid tribute. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman and Utpal Kumar Singh, Lok Sabha Secretary-General, also participated in the tribute.
Special Booklet and Portrait
A booklet containing Mookerjee’s profile, published by the Lok Sabha Secretariat in Hindi and English, was presented to the dignitaries. The portrait of Syama Prasad Mookerjee was unveiled by the then President of India, R. Venkataraman, on May 31, 1991, in recognition of his outstanding services to the nation.
Amit Shah’s Tribute
Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to Mookerjee, stating that every Indian is indebted to him for his efforts towards the country’s integrity. Shah highlighted Mookerjee’s struggle to keep Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir as integral parts of India.
BJP Leaders’ Tribute
Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva and other party leaders paid floral tribute and planted a sapling at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Statue Park. Sachdeva emphasized Mookerjee’s message of ‘one nation, one flag, one leader,’ which was fulfilled by PM Narendra Modi on August 5, 2019.
Mookerjee’s Legacy
Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. He resigned from the Cabinet on April 6, 1950, and founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951. Mookerjee was arrested during a visit to Kashmir in 1953 and died under detention on June 23, 1953.
