Leaders Mourn the Loss of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury

Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away at the age of 72. His death has led to an outpouring of grief from various political leaders.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Independent MP from Bihar’s Purnia, Pappu Yadav, expressed his sorrow, stating, “It’s not good, neither for the country nor for humanity, that good people die early. He was a symbol of social justice, social and economic revolution and struggle. Fewer people are left with such ideas – and it weakens the voice of the poor.”

JDU leader Neeraj Kumar also mourned Yechury’s death, calling it a significant loss to national politics. He said, “The demise of Sitaram Yechury is not only a loss to the ideological struggle of national politics, but he was such a personality who reflected on behalf of the country on international forums and was considered a reflection of the ideological struggle. At the same time, he played an effective role in the democratic way of reaching consensus amidst disagreement…This is a loss for everyone.”

Condolences from Prime Minister and President

Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Yechury as a “leading light of the Left” and praised his ability to connect across the political spectrum. In a post on X, he wrote, “Saddened by the passing away of Sitaram Yechury Ji. He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum. He also made a mark as an effective parliamentarian. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her grief, noting Yechury’s distinct and influential voice in politics. She wrote on X, “Saddened to learn about the demise of CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury. First as a student leader and then in national politics and as a parliamentarian, he had a distinct and influential voice. Though a committed ideologue, he won friends cutting across the party lines. My heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.”
