Larsen & Toubro Partners with ITER for World’s Largest Nuclear Fusion Project

New Delhi, India – Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major order from ITER, a France-based intergovernmental organization, for the world’s largest nuclear fusion project in Cadarache, Southern France. L&T will deploy advanced technologies to assemble ports and complex components with the Vacuum Vessel at the ITER facility.

L&T’s expertise in advanced manufacturing will be crucial in replicating the nuclear fusion process that powers the Sun, aiming to create a large-scale, carbon-free energy source. The company has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITER to establish a technical collaboration, supporting the development of state-of-the-art technology and hardware for fusion systems.

The ITER project involves complex construction and assembly tasks, with L&T playing a key role in managing operations in the Tokamak pit, a critical area within the facility. Pietro Barabaschi, Director General of ITER, praised L&T’s reliability in high-tech manufacturing, highlighting India’s strong partnership with ITER.

L&T’s previous contributions include manufacturing the world’s largest stainless-steel high-vacuum pressure vessel, the Cryostat, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Anil Parab, Whole-time Director & Sr. Executive Vice President of Heavy Engineering and L&T Valves, emphasized the collaboration’s potential to showcase L&T’s capabilities in global markets.

Doubts Revealed

Larsen & Toubro -: Larsen & Toubro, often called L&T, is a big company from India that works on building and engineering projects all over the world. They make things like buildings, roads, and machines.

ITER -: ITER is a large international project in France that is trying to create energy by copying the way the sun makes energy. It’s a big science experiment to see if we can make clean energy using nuclear fusion.

Nuclear Fusion -: Nuclear fusion is a process where two small atoms join together to make a bigger atom, releasing a lot of energy. It’s the same process that powers the sun and stars.

Cadarache -: Cadarache is a place in France where the ITER project is being built. It’s like a big science lab where scientists and engineers work on nuclear fusion.

Vacuum Vessel -: A Vacuum Vessel is a special container used in the ITER project to hold the nuclear fusion reaction. It keeps the reaction safe and controlled.

MoU -: MoU stands for Memorandum of Understanding. It’s like an agreement between two parties to work together on something, but it’s not as strict as a contract.

Tokamak pit -: The Tokamak pit is a part of the ITER project where the main fusion device, called a Tokamak, is placed. It’s like the heart of the fusion experiment.

Cryostat -: A Cryostat is a very cold container used to keep things at low temperatures. In the ITER project, it helps keep the fusion device cool so it can work properly.
