Lalu Prasad Yadav Calls for Justice After Doctor’s Tragic Death in Kolkata
RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav condemned the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, calling it barbaric and demanding justice. He stated, “Justice should be served to the doctors who are on a strike. What happened with the trainee doctor there was barbaric.”
The incident, which occurred on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, led to nationwide protests by the medical community. Doctors highlighted the safety issues of women at workplaces and demanded justice for the victim.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) declared a 24-hour withdrawal of services on Saturday by all modern medicine doctors across the country. Doctors at AIIMS in Delhi staged a protest march, holding posters and raising slogans of “We want justice.”
IMA Secretary General Dr. Anil Kumar J Nayak expressed hope that the government would bring the Central Protection Act (CPA) to ensure the safety of medical staff. He mentioned, “Our junior and resident doctors carried out a maha rally yesterday. 4000-5000 doctors joined it… Everyone is agitated and they are demanding safety. They are demanding CPA, Central Protection Act… We met Union Minister JP Nadda and we will keep meeting other authorities. They are positive but there is nothing concrete from them yet… We are hopeful that they will bring the law that we are demanding.”
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also addressed the issue, calling it a matter of concern for everyone and a significant societal issue. He stated, “Because of the incident that happened in West Bengal, the safety of the medical staff is a matter of concern. It is not just about the medical fraternity of the doctors and nurses.” He added, “This is a nationwide issue. It is a security and a big issue in the society. It is a matter of concern for everyone… The general public is also agitated…”
