Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen is set to compete for the bronze medal when he faces Malaysia’s world No. 7 Lee Zii Jia on Monday. Sen, ranked 22nd, lost to Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles semi-final at the Paris 2024 badminton tournament.

Sen had a strong start but ultimately lost to Axelsen 22-20, 21-14 in 54 minutes at the La Chapelle Arena. Despite the loss, Sen could still become the first Indian male badminton player to win an Olympic medal.

Sen has a 4-1 head-to-head record against Lee Zii Jia, including a win at the All-England Open earlier this year. In the semi-final, Sen initially led but Axelsen made a comeback to win the match. Sen’s Olympic journey has been historic, as he is the first Indian male shuttler to reach the semi-finals at the Summer Games.

In his Olympic debut, Sen topped his men’s singles group by defeating reigning All England champion Jonatan Christie and compatriot HS Prannoy in the round of 16. He also defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-Chen in the quarter-finals.
