Canada Open 2024: Lakshya Sen Leads India’s Badminton Team
Calgary, Canada – Ace shuttler Lakshya Sen is set to lead India’s challenge at the Canada Open 2024 badminton tournament, starting on Tuesday. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist aims to defend his title, which he won last year by defeating Asian Games gold medallist Li Shifeng of China.
Seeded fourth, Lakshya will begin his campaign against a qualifier. Joining him in the men’s singles are Priyanshu Rajawat, Kiran George, and Ayush Shetty. Rajawat, currently world No. 40, reached the quarter-finals of the US Open last month.
In the women’s singles, Malvika Bansod will look to continue her strong performance from the US Open, where she reached the semi-finals. Tanya Hemanth and Anupama Upadhyaya will also compete in the main draw.
In men’s doubles, with the absence of world No. 3 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s challenge will be led by world No. 43 Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek K. In women’s doubles, world No. 23 Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who reached the quarter-finals at the US Open, will spearhead the challenge. They have received a first-round bye.
In mixed doubles, Indian pairs Kona Tarun-Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli and Rohan Kapoor-Gadde Ruthvika Shivani will face each other in the first round.
Notably, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and World Championships bronze medallist HS Prannoy will not compete in the Canada Open.
