Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike Threat for Statehood and Democracy
Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known activist from Ladakh, has announced that he might go on a hunger strike if discussions with the government about Ladakh’s statehood and democratic rights do not succeed. Wangchuk emphasized the importance of restoring democracy in Ladakh, including statehood and grassroots democracy for indigenous tribal communities. He highlighted that the Indian Constitution provides special provisions for tribal communities, allowing them to have law-making powers through autonomous councils.
Wangchuk reminded the government of their promise to include Ladakh in Schedule 6 of the Constitution, a promise made in election manifestos. He shared his experience of a 130-day journey covering 1,000 kilometers from Leh to Delhi to raise awareness about Ladakh’s issues. Despite being detained by Delhi Police at the Delhi-Haryana border for violating prohibitory orders, Wangchuk and his supporters used the opportunity to spread their message further.
During their detention, they engaged in Satyagraha, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, and went on a hunger strike. They demanded to be taken to Rajghat and to meet with key government leaders. Authorities assured them that a meeting would be arranged soon. Wangchuk also expressed concerns about environmental degradation in the Himalayas due to large corporate projects and urged people to be mindful of their energy consumption.
The Delhi High Court confirmed that Wangchuk is no longer under restraint, and he continues to advocate for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, supported by the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance.
