Ladakh Achieves Full Functional Literacy Under ULLAS Program

New Delhi [India], June 25: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Dr. BD Mishra, announced that Ladakh has achieved full functional literacy under the ULLAS-Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, reaching over 97% literacy. This announcement was made during a celebration at Sindhu Sanskritik Kendra (SSK), Leh.

The event included the felicitation of new learners and volunteer teachers, and the launch of the 2023 Annual Achievement Report of the school department. Dignitaries also visited the ULLAS Mela.

Dr. Mishra encouraged learners and volunteers to continue their educational journey and emphasized the importance of parents sending their children to school. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the NEP 2020, which he said paves the way for the country’s future growth.

Sanjay Kumar congratulated the people of Ladakh and assured them of the Ministry of Education’s support to improve the school education system. He highlighted the volunteer-based ULLAS model and shared inspiring stories of perseverance, such as taking exams in snowy conditions.

ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, also known as the New India Literacy Programme (NILP), is a centrally sponsored scheme from 2022-2027. It aims to empower adults aged 15 and above with foundational literacy, critical life skills, basic education, vocational skills, and continuing education. The scheme has benefitted over 77 lakh people across the country, with the ULLAS Mobile App having more than 1.29 crore learners and 35 lakh volunteer teachers.
