Kuki Students’ Plea for Churachandpur Exam Venue Reinstatement in Delhi High Court

Kuki Students’ Plea for Churachandpur Exam Venue Reinstatement in Delhi High Court

Kuki Students’ Organisation Seeks Exam Venue Reinstatement

The Kuki Students’ Organisation has approached the Delhi High Court to reinstate Churachandpur, Manipur, as an examination venue for SSC exams. The plea requests the court to direct the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) and the Manipur government to facilitate travel for tribal students from Manipur’s hill districts to Aizawl, Mizoram, for their exams. This request follows the removal of Churachandpur as an exam venue.

Court Proceedings

On Monday, the respondents’ counsels requested time to gather instructions, leading the bench, headed by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, to adjourn the case to October 16. Advocate Rudrajit Ghosh, representing the petitioner, argues that the SSC’s decision lacks a reasonable basis and contradicts government reports, deeming it arbitrary and whimsical.

Impact on Students

The organisation stresses that the decision threatens the future of Kuki-Zo tribal students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The removal of a nearby exam centre could severely impact their success, jeopardising the future of an entire generation of educated tribal youth.

Challenges Faced

During the recent Combined Graduate Level Examination (Tier-I) 2024, over 500 Kuki candidates were reassigned to Aizawl, Mizoram, facing challenges like difficult travel and high costs. Many students struggled with lodging and basic amenities, leading some to miss the exam. Despite these hurdles, community support helped around 280 candidates reach Aizawl for their exams.
