Kolkata Police Urge Public to Avoid Misinformation in Trainee Doctor’s Case
The Kolkata Police have requested the public to refrain from sharing unverified information on social media regarding the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. This case has caused widespread outrage and protests, leading to a surge of information being shared online.
In a Facebook post, the Kolkata Police highlighted the challenges they are facing due to misinformation. They stated, “It has come to our notice that several factually incorrect and unverified claims are being widely circulated on social media. We urge everyone not to share or believe any so-called ‘facts’ about the case, as they are nothing but unfounded rumours.”
The police emphasized that spreading misinformation obstructs the investigation and causes further distress to the victim’s family. They assured the public that the investigation is progressing well and promised to file an early charge sheet for a speedy trial.
Earlier, the police summoned three junior doctors and one house staff member who were on duty the night of the incident to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) launched a nationwide strike, gathering outside various hospitals to demand justice for the trainee doctor. The Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, has offered his resignation following calls for his removal by protesting doctors.
