Kolkata Police Commissioner Addresses Rape and Murder of Doctor at RG Kar Medical College
On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In response, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal announced that the post-mortem report has been handed over to the family, following Supreme Court guidelines. Assistant Commissioner of Police Chandan Guha, who was on duty the night of the incident, has been removed from his post.
Commissioner Goyal assured that the police are open to hearing any concerns from students and that they can contact the police at any time. He also mentioned that the Joint CP Crime has met with the family of the deceased and addressed the students’ questions.
Dr. Shreya Shaw, representing the students and doctors of RG Kar Medical College, stated that while some demands have been met, the protest will continue until all demands are satisfied. The students have requested to see the post-mortem report and CCTV footage to ensure a transparent investigation.
The incident has sparked protests across the country. The Residents Doctors Association in AIIMS, Delhi, held a candle march demanding justice. JMM MP Mahua Maji condemned the incident and called for serious action. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar demanded a CBI inquiry, criticizing the initial police handling of the case.
The Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) has called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals on August 12 to support the residents of RG Kar Medical College. Several hospitals, including Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Maulana Azad Medical College, will suspend elective services in solidarity.
The incident has also led to political reactions, with TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee proposing expedited rape trials and criticizing the politicization of the issue. Protests have been held in various locations, including AIIMS Bhopal and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, demanding a CBI inquiry.
