Kirti Azad Seeks Fair Elections and Reforms in Delhi Cricket Association
New Delhi, July 22: The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for August 1 on a plea by former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad. Azad is asking for an administrator to take over the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and to recast the Electoral Roll based on a one family-one vote system before holding fresh elections.
Details of the Plea
Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain’s bench will consider the matter on August 1, 2024. Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, representing Azad, requested the court to treat the matter as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and transfer it to the Division Bench.
Azad’s plea calls for a transparent and fair membership system in the DDCA, including a clear waiting list for applicants. He argues that the current system is ad-hoc and benefits selective families, creating a monopoly. The plea also demands that only those who have paid their Club Subscription Fees on time should be allowed to vote in elections.
Issues Highlighted
Azad claims that the DDCA’s membership process lacks guidelines and is manipulated by officials to favor their relatives and staff. This has led to bogus voting and unfair elections, resulting in a few families controlling the association. The plea states that this corruption affects team selections, leaving deserving players out and causing the Delhi team to perform poorly in competitions like the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Proposed Reforms
To address these issues, Azad suggests a new membership system that ensures fairness and restricts voting to one vote per family. This would prevent the DDCA posts from becoming permanent positions of power and eliminate the existing monopoly.
