Kim Jong Un’s New Mercedes-Benz SUV Despite UN Sanctions
Seoul [South Korea], August 13: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was seen using a new Mercedes-Benz SUV, defying UN sanctions that ban North Korea from importing luxury goods. Photos published by the Korean Central News Agency showed Kim using the SUV on a special train to visit flood-hit areas in North Phyongan province.
UN resolutions, first enacted in 2006, ban the export of luxury cars to North Korea. Despite this, Kim has been seen in various high-end Mercedes-Maybach vehicles, including a GLS 600 and S-class limousines.
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Pyongyang, and the two leaders were seen in a Russian-made Aurus limousine. Kim received this luxury car as a gift from Putin and used it for the first time in March.
Kim Jong Un, 40, has a collection of foreign-made luxury cars, believed to be smuggled into the country. During his Russia visit, he traveled in a Maybach limousine brought on his special train. Other limousines he has used include a Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard and a Maybach S62.
Russia and China have blocked attempts to impose new UN sanctions on North Korea over its ballistic missile tests. Meanwhile, in the US, former President Donald Trump called Kim Jong Un, Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping ‘smart and vicious’ during a conversation with tech billionaire Elon Musk. Trump also claimed that Kim Jong Un calls President Joe Biden a ‘stupid man’ and mentioned that former President Obama warned him about North Korea.
