Kim Jong Un Unveils New Ballistic Missiles Amid Tensions with US and Allies

On August 4, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the delivery of a new tactical ballistic missile system at a ceremonial event in Pyongyang. The event was reported by North Korea’s state media, KCNA. A total of 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers, known as ‘Hwasong-11,’ were unveiled.

In his speech, Kim Jong Un stated that the US-led alliance has transformed into a military bloc based on nuclear power. He emphasized that Pyongyang would enhance its nuclear readiness to deter threats and protect itself.

The ceremony comes after North Korea’s recent floods and follows the country’s test-firing of a new tactical missile in July. This test occurred after the ‘Freedom Edge’ military drills conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

In June, the United States, Japan, and South Korea issued a joint statement condemning North Korea’s ballistic missile launches and its pursuit of nuclear weapons. The statement was made after a meeting of US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, Japan’s Vice Foreign Minister Masataka Okano, and South Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun in Virginia.

Additionally, during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang on June 19, Russia and North Korea signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty. This treaty includes provisions for immediate military assistance in the event of an attack on either country.
