Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Aims to Join PIA Privatisation Bid
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in Pakistan is planning to participate in the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). This move, directed by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, involves the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Investment Board reaching out to Federal Minister for Privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan to express their interest in bidding. The Board highlighted PIA’s importance as a national asset and stated their intention to offer a better deal than Blue World City, a real estate firm.
Currently, Blue World City is the only bidder, offering PKR 10 billion for a 60% stake, which is below the government’s minimum requirement of PKR 85 billion. Despite the Privatisation Commission’s request to increase the bid, Blue World City’s chairman, Saad Nazir, has maintained their original offer.
The privatisation of PIA is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to raise funds, supported by a USD 7 billion program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The government is offering between 51% and 100% ownership of the airline. During a Senate Privatisation Committee meeting, chaired by Senator Talal Chaudhry, it was revealed that interested companies are requesting additional terms, such as laying off current employees and covering tax liabilities while transferring 76% of PIA shares to the new owner.
This situation highlights the challenges Pakistan faces in balancing fiscal recovery with workforce and stakeholder interests during the privatisation process.
