Wayanad (Kerala), August 4: Kerala Minister K Rajan announced that 220 bodies have been recovered and 180 people are still missing in the landslide-hit Wayanad district. The rescue operation, now in its sixth day, has involved 1382 members from various forces and about 1800 volunteers.

Minister Rajan mentioned that 160 body parts have also been found, with 34 bodies still unidentified. He added that 171 bodies have been released to relatives. One body was recovered from Malappuram and one body part from Soojippara today.

Union Minister George Kurien met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the relief efforts. PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. The landslides, which occurred on July 30 in Chooralmala and Mundakkai, have resulted in 308 deaths.

Wayanad District Collector Meghashree stated that the rescue operation is in full swing, with over 1300 forces deployed today. Precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of volunteers.

The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office has instituted night patrolling in the affected areas to prevent trespassing. No one is allowed to enter the houses or areas at night without police permission for rescue operations.
